The Tiny Theater is back this summer at the Big Sky Farmer’s Market. It all started with a 14’ cargo trailer and a couple of theater-makers who knew nothing about trailer brakes. Conceived in partnership between the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center and Nervous Theatre, The Tiny Theater is our newest experiment in putting theater on wheels and bringing it to where folks are.

An ancient concept (i.e. medieval strolling players) modernized for today’s mountain audiences, the Tiny Theater is entering its second summer with a fully operational stage featuring two performers each week, putting on tiny plays in rotation throughout the market. Powered by a multitude of rechargeable lithium batteries and solar panels, the Tiny Theater functions off the grid.

Audiences can enjoy a new stage this summer with performances that last between 7 -10 minutes in any iteration weekly at the Big Sky Farmers market. Stay for one minute or eleven; there is a tiny storyline for everybody. In addition to the novel visual spectacle, patrons also enjoy the tiny play through headphones to simulate a truly dynamic theatre experience without disrupting neighboring vendors and other performers at the market.

Based in Bozeman, MT, Nervous Theatre is a theatrical collective dedicated to creating and touring new works and radically reimagined classics. Their work places an emphasis on process and co-creation through collaborative devising. Nervous Theatre’s productions have been presented across the country, most recently at Gloucester Stage (MA), The Boston Conservatory, and Tinworks Art (MT).

Heathers The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid J.D. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to bite the bullet and kiss Heather’s aerobicized ass...but J.D. has another plan for that bullet.

Brought to you by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, “Desperate Housewives”), Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She’s the Man). Pirates of Penzance

Set sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theatre history. A fresh take on one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic operas, this updated version of The Pirates of Penzance took New York by storm when it premiered in Central Park in 1980, leading to a subsequent smash-hit Broadway run.

Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious, hopeful farce follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. Frederic's melodious tones win over the heart of Major-General Stanley's songbird daughter, Mabel, but when the Pirate King discovers that General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an "ingenious paradox" may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of "The very model of a modern Major-General."

Oklahoma!

Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!
Music by Richard Rodgers, Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, based on the play "Green Grow the Lilacs" by Lynn Riggs

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Alexander is having a bad day. A terrible day. A horrible day. To be quite honest, it's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes. In this delightful adaptation of her popular book, Judith Viorst sets Alexander's rather trying life to music and brings to the stage one of America's feistiest characters. Not only does Alexander wake up with gum in his hair, but his mother forgets to pack him dessert, and his best friend decides he's not his best friend anymore. And if that's not bad enough, Alexander's brothers don't have any cavities but—he does. And just when it can't get any worse, there are lima beans for supper and —yuck!—kissing on TV. It is enough to make anyone want to go to Australia. Alexander's struggles with life's daily dramas will not only entertain but educate young audiences as they identify with Alexander and the obstacles he encounters, encouraging them to share their feelings and to realize that bad days happen—even in Australia. Commissioned and premiered by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Book and Lyrics by Judith Viorst. Music by Shelly Markham

She Loves Me

A delightful romantic comedy that soars through the exhilarating and sometimes confusing anticipation of love. Sales clerks in a Hungarian parfumerie, Georg and Amalia spend their days quarreling with each other; yet unbeknownst to them, at night they write adoring love letters to each other as lonely heart’s pen pals. How their discovery of each other unfolds is nothing short of endearing.

She Loves Me is based on Miklós László play Parfumerie, which also inspired the 1940 Jimmy Stewart-Margaret Sullavan film The Shop Around the Corner, the 1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical version of In the Good Old Summertime, and most recently the 1998 Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan film of You’ve Got Mail.
